MEANING AND Different Types Of Adventure Sports
Adventure sports activities are the risky and dangerous activities which are mostly performed in natural environment. These are the activities which give us exciting or unusual experience with uncertain outcome.
Thus, adventure sports can be defined as physical activities in which the person is exposed to injury while performing them. These activities give a lot of excitement, thrill and increase anxiety along with self esteem. These activities are also termed as Extreme Sports.
Adventure sports are different from traditional sports. These activities are usually competitive in nature and involve risk and excitement . Adventure sports is a bold activity which involve hazardous(dangerous) actions and outcome is uncertain. Adventure sports comprise of very wide range of activities like Mountaineering, Rock Climbing, Scuba Diving, Parasailing, Surfing, Skiing, Paragliding etc. Adventure sports are undertaken at various places depending on natural topography and weather conditions.
Types Of Adventure Sports And Their Safety Equipment’s
Camping is an outdoor recreational activity. The participant known as camper leaves urban areas, their home region and enjoy nature while spending several nights outdoor , usually at a campsite. Camping may involve the use of tent, canvas, cabin, shelter, etc. Camping is a part of many youth organizations around the world such as Scouting, NCC, etc. It is used to teach self-reliance and teamwork. Camping is often enjoyed in conjunction with many other activities such as Canoeing, Climbing, Trekking, Hiking, Fishing, etc. Campsite selected should be near water reserviour such as river, stream, lake, etc., and it should be safe site, moreover away from dangerous or wild animals. The camper should have sufficient knowledge to dig pit , construct camp and the safety wall around the tent.
EQUIPMENT FOR CAMPING-
For camping, the camper needs the following equipment and tools such as waterproof tent or canvas or cloth or poly-sheet (for tent), rope, torch, axe, knife, cutter, sleeping bag, water bottle, mug, pan, binocular, first aid kit, back-pack, etc.
2. ROCK CLIMBING-
Rock climbing is an activity in which participant climbs up or down or across natural rock formation. The goal is to reach the summit or top of a formation or the end point of a pre-defined route without falling. To successfully complete a climb, one must return to base of the route safely. Rock climbing is physically and mentally demanding sport, it often tests the climber’s strength, endurance, agility and balance along with mental control.
EQUIPMENT FOR ROCK CLIMBING –
Rock-climbing is dangerous activity thus proper knowledge of climbing techniques and usage of specialized climbing equipment’s are required for safety such as climbing shoes, harnesses, clippers belay device, bolts, hexes, pitons, climbing helmet, safety belt, safety hooks, etc.
Mountaineering or mountain climbing is an age old activity of climbing up or scaling the steep slopes of a mountain side in hopes of reaching the summit or top. Now-a-days, it has turned up as sports, hobby or profession. Mountaineering began as attempt to reach the highest point of climbed or unclimbed big mountain. Mountaineering is branched into three parts –Rock Craft, Snow Craft and Skiing. Mountain climbing involves numerous activities such as snow, ice or rock climbing, snow camping, back-packing, etc. Mountaineering requires a lot of experience, athletic ability, high attitude raining, technical knowledge to maintain safety.
EQUIPMENT FOR MOUNTAINEERING –
It requires specializes tools and equipment’s like snow climbing shoes, snow cutter, hex, axe, climbing rope, clippers, snow gloves, climbing helmet, safety hooks, high energy, packed food, etc.
It is a long adventurous journey undertaken on foot in areas where common means of transport are generally not available. Trekker should use natural resources and consider safety principle. The trekker should not spoil or disturb the nature whereas fauna and flora should be appreciated.
EQUIPMENT FOR TREKKING –
The trekker should prepare properly for the trekking and they should carry important required materials like tent, sleeping bag, water bottle, mug, pan, rope, safety kite, first aid kit, trekking map of area, knife, binocular, backpack etc.
5. RIVER RAFTING-
It is also named as White Water Rafting. It is a challenging recreational outdoor activity using a boat or raft to navigate over the flow of river. Raft is lightweight multi-layer rubberized boat filled with air, its chambers enabling it to float on water. This is usually done over fast flowing river or stream in order to provide thrill and excitement to rafter. The development of this activity as leisure sports has become popular in Himalayan Rivers. This activity is dangerous if safety measures are not considered.
EQUIPMENT FOR RIVER RAFTING –
It requires safe raft swim suit, life jacket, raft push, knowledge of swimming and following the expert or lifeguard instructions, knowledge about river flow and its curve, safe destination point.
It is a water sports in which the wave rider referred to as ‘Surfer’ rides on moving wave balancing on the surfing board. The wave usually carrying the surfer near the shore. The waves suitable for surfing are primarily found in oceans, sea, lake or in rivers in form of standing wave or tidal bore.
